The Pyrenean shepherd' s dog is the oldest of aU French shepherd dogs. In the Pyrenean mountains he is working together with the great white Pyrenean mountaindog. His job is to look after and to drive the cattle while the mountaindog has to proteet the cattle against wolves and bears. It's a middle size dog, in between 38cm and 50cm. He's alert, lively, suspiciously to strangers, intelligent and he adores his master. He is one of the lesser known races from the groupe of shepherd's dogs, but he is becoming more popular.
From the 18th century the farmers and the shepherds have been using the Pyrenean shepherd's dog to herd their cows and sheep. During the first world war 2 French army officers discovered these many-sided small dogs. They served the army on the battle field as patrol dog or as connection dog. The connection dogs had to boog messages from his master on battle field A to bis second master on battlefield B. The officers spook highly about the qualities ofthe Pyrenean shepherd's dog and thanks to them the race stayed popular after the war. Each valley of the Pyrenean mountains had his type. As the mountains became more accessible, the Pyrenean shepherd became more homogeneous. But one thing stayed the same : his character. Todays Pyrenean shepherd's dog is a charming dog who can to everything and can learn everything.
The most known is the fauve(blond) Pyrenean shepherd's dog. Grey is also currently. Black and harlequin is rear.
We have 2 varieties : the rough faced( long hair) and the smooth faced(short hair) Pyrenean shepherd.
